My favourite dish from Mappen is the ontama gyudon (medium) for $5.90

Ontama Gyudon $5.90
Mappen Bondi Junction opened fairly recently and business has kicked off quite well. Originally, this was the location of KFC before the Westfield opened. Since KFC moved out of here, several restaurants have opened and closed. Mappen has been the first successful one.

If you're interested in a quick and cheap meal, Mappen is your pick. It's practically fast food - but Japanese style. Everything is kind of pre-cooked. When I order my ontama gyudon (beef bowl with half boiled egg), the rice comes out of a machine, and then they spoon some of the beef and onion on top, then crack an egg over it. That's it and you're done. Ready in under a minute.

You put your food on a tray, slide it over to the deep fried section, where there is choices of tempura, takoyaki, tofu, sausage, and the cold section, where there is salads, dessert and finally to the paystation where you can order drinks and pay for your meal.

Then there is the condiments/water/tempura flakes/shallot section. I fill myself a glass of cold water and spoon some of the shallots onto my beef and I'm all ready.

The gyudon tastes very authentic and I absolutely love the egg. With some research, I understand they make the half boiled egg by putting raw eggs in a ceramic pot filled with boiling water and it partially cooks just by the residual heat.

As a courtesy to the restaurant, you're asked to take the tray over to the kitchen.

For $5.90, it's a good value meal and quite delicious.

  1. Ooh thanks for this! I usually end up getting sushi at BJ but will give this a go next time we are hungry while shopping in BJ :)
